Whether it’s a two-strand, three-strand, or flat twist-out, each style has its great. Personally, I lean toward three-strand and flat twist-outs because they give my finer hair a fuller, more voluminous look without needing too much separation or manipulation—unlike the two-strand twist-out. What’s your go-to style?
In this post, I’ll walk you through how I create and maintain each twist-out so they last anywhere from 7 to 14 days. The products mentioned is what am using per now for moisturized defined twist out.
Let’s get into it!
Two Strand Twist Out
Step 1: Start on clean, damp hair
I cleanse using our hydrating shampoo and condition hair with our multi-purpose leave-in conditioner to keep it soft and moisturized.
Step 2: I use my Curling Gum
I use my curling gum to each section that am going to twist for maximum hold and therefore definition.
Step 3: Two-strand twist
Part hair into small to medium sections. Pick one section and apply curling gum, stretch, smooth. Take that small section and split it into two even strands. Twist the Strands Around Each Other. Cross one strand over the other repeatedly, all the way to the ends. Keep the tension even but not too tight to avoid scalp stress. Coil the ends around your finger for a neat finish. Continue the same process for all sections. Be sure to coil the ends with your fingers for that juicy finish!
Step 4: Let it set
Air dry or sit under a dryer until completely dry.
Step 5: The Take Down
Gently unravel each twist using an oil-coated finger to avoid frizz. Separate for volume — fluff roots with a pick if desired!
Results:
Super defined curls
Juicy shine
Long-lasting, soft hold
Three Strand Twist Out
Three-strand twist guarantees that my hair will be defined. On the surface, a finished 3-strand twist may look like a 2-strand twist kind of but technically, it involves wrapping three strands of your hair around one another.
I do all the above in the two strand twist but the only difference is how I twist and separate. So that is what am basically going to emphasize here. Let’s start from step 3
Step 3: Three-strand twist

Pick a small section and apply curling gum, stretch, smooth. Now separate your small section further into 3 smaller equal sections or, lets call them strands. We are going to bring these into a rotation like a clock motion. You could start from whichever side you are comfortable with. Let’s say the left strand is A, the middle strand is B, and the strand on the right is C.

So I will take the strand A (in the left) all the way to the right that is, cross it over B and C.

Take the new strand on the left which is B also all the way to the right crossing over C and A.

Then you will notice C is the new strand on the left. Cross it over A and B.

Continue in this motion until you reach close to the ends of your hair. As you get closer to the ends of your hair, you will notice that you can’t continue with the 3 strand twist, so simply coil or twirl the rest around itself to seal your twist. You may add butter or gel at the end to make it easier.

And here is your finished look. Remember, smaller to medium twists are another secret to definition.

Let your hair dry completely.
If you unravel the twists before your hair is properly dry, then you are going to realize maximum frizz and less definition. To maximize definition, leave the twists to set over night. If you were intending to take them down immediately, then you could sit under a drier to quicken the drying process.
Take note that immediate takedown would require a curling cream or gel included for styling. This will give you immediate hold and curl definition without having to wait for a minimum of a day, 2 or 3 days if you used simply a butter.
Separation process
Using oil coated fingers, I gently separate the twists. With three-strand twists, I usually don’t need to separate the twists any further once I take them down. They naturally give me a more defined and fuller look compared to two-strand twists, which often require extra separating and fluffing to achieve similar volume.
Lightly lift roots with a pick being careful not to pull all the way through, and style your Twist Out as you please
Pick the roots if you must. I may may not tamper with the roots as hair will gradually get together as the day goes by. Add gel to sleek down the edges if you like. The result is a super-defined voluminous twist-out that will retain moisture and definition for up to 7 to 14 days without re-twisting.

To maintain the style, I sleep on a satin covered pillow. another option could be to wear a satin bonnet or silk material, and in the morning use my fingers to fluff, then leave the rest for nature. You can re-gel edges if you choose. If I find that it’s dry, I use my misting spray to freshen and hold.
