Choose hair extension that is or close to your texture (optional). Most people use the soft afro kinky for 4b 4c hair but some few prefer the coarse texture. The challenge with this extension is it shed’s a lot so you will want to cover your hair before reaching your kitchen for example.

Part hair into 3 sections

So you want to start on clean moisturized hair.

Using your rat tail comb begin by making a U part that’s, front to the crown. Use the arch of your eye brows to guide u on a u shape. Now that part (the U shape) is going to be the longest.

Then I usually create another division point right behind the ear. So that’s how you get your three sections.

Pay attention to how you section hair

The braid pattern is very important. When braiding the back start from down moving upwards so it easily and naturally gives you that 45 degree graduation when cutting, where the bottom is shorter and gradually gets longer. Make the sides also as flat as possible.

Fill in most areas with hair for a natural appearance

It could be a challenge when you have sparse hair to achieve this hairstyle coz you end up with cornrows that have bigger gaps. The simple trick is, try to fill in most parts (pack), each cornrow with smaller pieces of hair so it gives the illusion that you have thick hair. The smaller pieces can be on the sides and back then make the pieces thicker at the crown and front. That will give your hair a natural looking fuller appearance. Otherwise with thick hair, it may be easier than you thick.

Make a tapered cut

First thing secure the U part with a hair tie or clips then start cutting from the back and sides with a 45 degree graduation. When you are satisfied with the length, move to the crown and front, spread the hair. Using the side and back hair as a guide, cut the hair at the natural fall while creating movement in all directions and, finally that will give a tapered cut.

The video below illustrates how we do it.

Maintenance

To maintain this hairstyle for a month or more, you will need mousse. Mousse helps with moisturizing, manageability, softness and shine. In that way you will be able to keep your haircut fresh all through.
