Crochet TAPERED cut hairstyles ( also known as kyangwe hair style) are usually short at the back and progressively get longer towards the front. I will briefly show you a simple technique on how to fake a TAPERED CUT without necessarily cutting your own hair and also how to maintain it.

Choose braiding hair that is close to your hair texture
Choose a hair extension that is close to your texture (optional). Most people use the soft afro kinky for 4b 4c hair, while others prefer the coarse texture. The challenge with this extension is it sheds a lot just after cutting (shaping you hair), so you will want to cover your hair before reaching your kitchen, for example.

Part hair into 3 sections, then to 4 sections
So you want to start on clean, moisturized hair. Using your rat tail comb, begin by; making a U part that’s front to the crown. Use the arch of your eyebrows to guide you on a U shape. Then I usually create another division point right behind the ear to get three sections, and finally, you divide the middle section into 2 to make 4 sections.

Pay attention to how you cornrow your hair
When doing the cornrows at the back, begin from the nape moving upwards so that it easily and naturally gives you that 45 degree graduation when cutting, where the bottom is shorter and gradually gets longer as you move upwards. Make the sides as flat as possible as you come towards the occipital bone area.

Then if you wanted a line to make a deep part in the side the picture below shows how you would do the cornrows in the front area.

Start To Crochet and fill in most areas with hair for a fuller natural look
It could be challenging when you have sparse hair achieving this hairstyle, because you might end up with cornrows with big gaps. The simple trick is to try to fill in most parts (take your time to pack those cornrows). Install the smaller pieces on the sides and back, then the thicker and longer pieces at the crown and front so it gives the illusion that you have thick hair. That will give your hair a natural-looking fuller appearance. Otherwise, if you naturally have thick hair (with many cornrows), it may be easier than you think.

Make a tapered cut
First thing secure the U part with a hair tie or clips then start cutting from the back with a 45 degree graduation stopping about the occipital bone. When you are satisfied with the length, move to the sides with 45 degree graduation too. Next move to the front. Start by spreading the hair. Remember, the right TAPERED cut is usually short at the back and progressively gets longer towards the front. Using the side and back hair as a guide, cut the front hair while creating movement in all directions and, finally that will give a tapered cut. I usually prefer cutting each section just after installing the extension before completing the whole head simply because it gives me a better picture.

Maintenance
To maintain this hairstyle for a month or more, you will need to use mousse at least once a week. Mousse helps with moisturizing, manageability, softness and shine. In that way you will be able to keep your haircut fresh all through.

You will notice in some photos the cutting changes, where we had to maximize more length in the front area, and still other photos we used different braiding hair.
